The safe room, also called the panic room, is a room in the house, where the family members can get secure shelter in the event of a terrorist attack, natural calamities, burglaries or any threatening situation. While having a safe room in the house, sounds good as an investment for the safety of the family, there are some very rich people, who build many fortified rooms in their home. These people normally don’t have a budget and thus spend huge amount of money to build their safe rooms. For usual people like us, we build safe rooms for the purpose of rendering a secured shelter for our family where they can run and hide in case of emergency. The room need not have steel walls and doors, but a fortified door and wall is indeed necessary that opens outwards. The material for the door can be wood or any other thing, but it should be hard to break through. Always use a door jamb made of steel, so that the door can not be kicked in. The ideal safe room is one which is window-less, since windows are gateways for burglars. Keep the room fortified with adequate supplies of food, water, first aid kits, medicines. Always keep a phone in the room and any defensive weapon by which you can combat any attack. It is next to impossible to predict, as to how long you and your family may be confined in a safe room, in the event of an attack. Thus it is important to keep the room well-ventilated with adequate lighting and good hygiene. Since you may have to be confined for several days or weeks, the hygiene is critically important and adequate hygiene supplies must be kept in the room. One of the reasons why people build a safe room is to keep safe from burglars. A burglary attack can happen anytime irrespective of how safe your home or neighborhood is. And when burglars walk in, the last thing you can do is to negotiate or co-operate with them. After building the safe room make sure that all the family members know where it is and how to use it. Teach the children the importance of the room. Never use the room for relaxation or a playground for children. Rather use it when you need it most, during an emergency. Remember to keep the keys of the safe room inside, so that no body can move in there. Keep adequate supplies of the bare necessities available at all the time. Once inside, call the authorities during the emergency, and wait till they reach your house and the problem is under control. Never come out of your room before the police arrive. In case of a burglary, you can only make the situation worse by appearing on the scene. |
